How To Be Successful In Life – Know What You Want
You Can’t Hit the Target If You Don’t Aim First
If you have something you want to achieve, the clearer you are about what you want to achieve the more chance you have of achieving it. If your target is vague and/or impractical, it is so much more difficult to achieve in two ways:
- If you don’t know what your target is, how will you know when you’ve achieved it?
- A vague target means you can’t effectively plan to achieve it.
Your dreams and ambitions won’t just land in your lap neatly gift-wrapped for your enjoyment without you having to do a thing. That very rarely happens. You are the one that has to fulfill your own ambitions. That’s why targets are important.
Setting targets is quite easy, but it takes some discipline and common sense. Do you have that?
Do you want that target badly enough?
There will be some hard work along the way to hitting your ultimate target. You’ve got to make sure it’s really something you want and that you’re prepared to work hard for. Is it really *your* target – or something that someone else wants you to do? If you don’t buy into that target you’ll take no enjoyment in having achieved it and the journey will seem twice as long and three times as hard.
Really think hard about what’s to be gained by achieving your target. Weigh up the potential gain up against the price that is to be paid for all the hard work that achieving your target will take. That price could be in time, energy, relationships or money. Your loved ones as well as you could be the ones paying the price.
Is it worth it?
If it is, you’re ready to set your targets.
Put your targets down on paper
That will make your targets seem more real to you. As you write them, you’ll find yourself naturally thinking of ways to achieve your targets. Jot them down! Keep all those ideas you have because later in the journey towards your target you may need Plan B, C…and Z! Those ideas will always be useful when you have to re-assess and change your strategy.
For a target to be effective, it has to be set in a certain way. It has to be SMART
Let’s look in turn at each of those criteria for target setting.
Is your goal?
Make sure you’re clear about what you want to achieve. It will make it easier for you to plan for success. If you don’t know what you want, you can’t work out how to get it.
It’s easy to be discouraged when things don’t work out well or when they take longer than you expect. Some targets take a long time to achieve. Stop the discouragement that can create by setting smaller targets along the way. That will help to keep your confidence boosted because you will pass targets quickly and see some success for your hard work. These are the rewards for your hard work. They’ll help you to have the energy and commitment to keep going when things don’t go according to Plan A.
Make sure that your plan has taken account of the potential problems that you may face along the path to your target. Build in some time for things to go wrong. This is much easier if you are realistic and honest with yourself about what might go wrong.
Time frames are vital in goal setting. They are a little flexible, but if you don’t set yourself a time by which you want to have achieved your target, it’s easier for you to wander from your purpose and get distracted – especially if things don’t easily go your way at the beginning. That time frame is what will give impetus to achieve your target. It will help get you out of bed and trying on the bad days.
Keep your targets in mind daily. Even write down what you need to achieve *today*. A written record really helps you remember your targets, but also makes them real. Put it somewhere visible so you can see it daily. Psychologically that will focus you and make you more likely to stick to your targets.
So – be smart, make SMART targets. Making clear aims is really an essential part of planning to achieve your targets. Knowing what you want to achieve and how you can achieve it takes you a long way towards getting what you want.
