How To Be Successful In Life – You Have To Be Happy
Happiness Is What You Perceive It To Be
Everyone, if they thought about it, would express a desire to be happy. No one would strive to be unhappy. However, many people would not say they were happy. Why? Because they are looking for happiness in the wrong places; they are looking outside of themselves for other people or events to make them happy. That is doomed to fail because if your happiness is dependent on others, you will always have the nagging doubt at the back of your mind that the source of your happiness might fail you.
Happiness is what you perceive it to be because it means different things to different people. So what is it really, and can the concept of motivation be applied to happiness?
Happiness arises from you feeling the confidence of knowing where your life is headed and achieving your targets along the journey towards your goal. These will be different for everybody. Lazarus, a cognitive emotion theorist, defines happiness as an emotion, which is created by making progress towards your goals (Franken, 1994). Therefore happiness can be linked with motivation and achieving each step towards your goal should, according to Lazarus, make you happy.
To feel happy, you need to take time to think about how you feel and what you have achieved. You need to relax and properly assess what progress you have made towards your goal. You also need to think about where you are headed from here, because that will give you confidence that you know what you need to do, which will ward away anxiety and worry, which rob you of your happiness.
To experience happiness you need to be aware of yourself and your surroundings. You need to be relaxed enough that you notice things that make you happy, rather than being stressed and worried about achieving your next goal. Happiness comes from being aware that you are in control of your life and that you can make yourself happy.
Happiness comes from being engaged in a purpose and seeing results for your hard work. It is about being satisfied with where your life is headed and how well you are progressing towards your goals. Happiness comes from living your life to its fullest extent and enjoying all the little things you may often overlook through either living in the past or in the future.
Happiness is right now, this second, this moment. Don’t waste your life living in past happiness or planning for it based on the occurrence of some future event or relationship. You are the only one who can make you happy. Nothing or nobody else can.
Happiness is what you take it to be and what you make of it. You are the only one that can make you happy but the good news is there is no magic formula for happiness to find. Recognize that you have the power to control your life and know that you are progressing along the right path for you. That will make you happy, especially when you stop to enjoy the view every now and again.
To your success,
