How To Be Successful In Life – Charismatic Leadership
A Leader Is Only As Good As His Followers
You can lead where you want, but if you can’t get people to follow you, you become a hermit. As a leader, it is essential to know how to get people to believe your vision and to enlist them into helping you achieve your aims. You have to recognize that you need your team, perhaps more than they need you – and treat them accordingly with respect and trust.
The way to start getting a good team together is to recruit them yourself. To do this effectively, you have to be very clear about what you are trying to achieve and whom will you need in order to achieve this? How many people? What sort of skills mix?
However, you may inherit a ready-made team and then it is up to you as leader to get the very best results out of them that you can. Here are a few things that will help you do that:
The first thing you have to do is believe in your vision yourself. Make it live for you. Make it seem real. That will intensify your desire to achieve it and also if it is real to you, it will make it easier for you to convince other people to follow you and help you make your goal a reality.
Listen to your team
Don’t confuse self-belief with arrogance. You have to know that what you are aiming to do is really something you want to do and that you should be doing, but there may be several ways to achieve this aim – some of them better than the ideas you had. A good leader listens to his followers.
Team members who are listened to feel valued and they work harder because now they have a stake in achieving the aim too.
You will have heard the saying ‘you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink’. Well, it’s true. You can only get your team to do so much by telling and ordering. The rest you have to achieve by valuing them as individuals and respecting their talents.
Utilize your team members effectively
Everyone has different talents. A good leader needs to be aware of the talents and weakness of each team member so that their skills can be utilized at the appropriate times. Not only will this help to ensure that the best person is doing a particular job, but it will help your team members to feel valued and respected. That way they’ll be more motivated to work hard for you and to share their ideas in future. That has to be good for fostering success.
Support your team
Create an environment whereby people can learn from each other and can admit mistakes. Everyone learns better that way and the mistakes that are made get resolved quickly; however, you as leader have a huge role in shaping a culture where it is acceptable and safe to admit mistakes. Take that responsibility seriously.
A leader is only as good as his followers so try to ensure you have the best people on your team and that they all understand and follow your vision. That’s only the start of your job, though. Keep in mind you are leading *individuals* with a variety of strengths and weaknesses and personalities. Respect them all for their differences and treat them, as you would wish to be treated. They will reward you with hard work and dedication that has you flying past your goalposts.
To your success,
