How To Be Successful In Life – Leadership Traits
Leadership Is More Than Just Barking Orders
At its most fundamental leadership is about people. Ask anyone who has had to lead a group of some kind, whether that group is work or leisure oriented – inspiring, motivating and trying to get a team of people to all act together in pursuit of one goal is more difficult than it sounds, but there are a few ways to make that task a little easier.
Leadership isn’t just management. Management is about containment and day-to-day administration: getting things done. Leadership at its best is demonstrating to people a way forward and inspiring people to move in that direction with them to continually achieve more.
As a leader you’re responsible for plotting out previously unmarked territory. It’s your job to communicate to your team exactly what needs to be done and getting them to really feel like they *want* to do it. Only when you have got your employees to *want* to do the things you’re asking them to do will they put their whole effort into it so that they can achieve their whole potential at the task.
Leadership is about having the courage, the intelligence and the predictive ability to do the right thing to advance a project, whatever it is. You’re looking into the future and trying to make sure your project succeeds in that as yet unknown territory.
Good leaders have the empathy to act for the good of customers, stakeholders, partners – all those involved. They trust team members and respect them as people they themselves may learn from. Therefore, leaders don’t have to know all the answers – but they should have an idea about where to look for them. They should therefore make the most of their team, recognizing that these individuals have a wealth of talents and abilities different to their own, which may be useful to further the project and achieve more goals.
Leadership is about being goal-oriented, determined and flexible to overcome difficulties and setbacks. Leaders remain part of a team, working hard in tune with them to achieve the one goal they all seek; they don’t sit on high issuing orders for the workers to follow. But they do have to sometimes think outside the box – to keep hold of the bigger picture.
Leaders are the ones who juggle the competing demands of other managers, customers/clients etc in order to achieve the best possible result for the biggest number of people. That’s not an easy job and it takes a good team behind you to do it, so respect and trust that team, learn from them an use them to the best of their individual abilities in order to get a good job done.
Leaders have to have the drive and determination to overcome obstacles and to instill in their team the belief that obstacles can be overcome more easily if the whole team works together. Leaders have to trust their team and their team, in turn, will trust them. They have to be honest and open, as well as adaptable to any changes, which need to be made.
So leadership is about so much more than just barking orders; leadership is really about inspiring, motivating and influencing employees to do their jobs in an outstanding manner: doing their best and then striving to do more. See? I told you – leadership is about people.
